This early series of paper-cut illustrations was created to depict iconic figures of Chinese folk performing arts. The eight characters represent renowned performers active in Beijing’s Tianqiao district from the late Qing to the Republican era, including the master of xiangsheng and other artists whose skills have gradually become rare.
